What Is Icon Resin Infiltration?

Icon is a micro-invasive treatment that works from within the enamel rather than on top of it. A white spot forms where enamel has lost mineral content and become porous, which changes how light passes through that area and makes it appear chalky or opaque against the surrounding tooth.

Rather than drilling the area away and filling it, Icon infiltrates those pores with resin. Because the resin has optical properties similar to healthy enamel, light travels through the treated area more like it does through the rest of the tooth, so the spot becomes far less noticeable.

No anesthetic injection is typically required, and healthy tooth structure stays intact.

What Causes White Spots on Teeth?

White spots, sometimes called white spot lesions or enamel opacities, develop for several reasons:

• ‍After orthodontic treatment. Plaque collecting around brackets can demineralize the enamel underneath, leaving pale marks once braces come off.
• ‍Enamel demineralization. Early mineral loss from plaque acids, often the first visible stage before a cavity forms.
• ‍Dental fluorosis. Excess fluoride exposure while teeth were still developing can leave mild to moderate white flecking or mottling.
• ‍Developmental enamel defects. Some opacities form while the tooth is developing, before it ever erupts.

Identifying the cause matters, because it directly affects whether Icon is likely to produce a meaningful improvement.

What Icon Resin Infiltration Can Treat

Icon may be recommended for:

Not every white spot responds the same way. What to Expect During Your Appointment

We begin by carefully examining and photographing the affected teeth using intraoral cameras and, where needed, digital X-rays. The treatment area is thoroughly cleaned and isolated to keep it dry and protect the surrounding gum tissue.

The surface of the white spot is then prepared so the resin can penetrate the enamel. After the area is dried and evaluated, the Icon resin is applied, allowed to infiltrate the lesion, and light-cured. The tooth is finished and polished, and final photographs document the result.

One thing to know: the appearance of the tooth immediately after treatment may be affected by temporary dehydration. A more representative result may be visible after the tooth has naturally rehydrated.

Will the White Spot Completely Disappear?

Icon can significantly reduce the appearance of many white spots, but complete disappearance or a perfect color match cannot be guaranteed. Results depend on the cause, depth, size, and location of the enamel lesion.

Some cases benefit from whitening, microabrasion, composite bonding, or a combination of treatments. Where a spot is too deep or extensive for resin infiltration, porcelain veneers may produce a better result, and we will tell you so directly.
